Terms of service

Last updated: 2026-05-02

Pre-launch draft. These terms are a working draft pending review by counsel. Do not rely on them for binding legal use until the "lawyer-reviewed" stamp appears on this page.

1. Acceptance

By installing or using Proof Brief ("the Service"), you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use the Service.

2. The Service

Proof Brief is a Microsoft Word add-in that detects unverifiable legal citations by querying the public CourtListener database. It is a research aid, not legal advice. You are solely responsible for the accuracy of citations in any legal filing you submit.

3. License

Subject to these terms, we grant you a non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use the Service on your devices for your own legal practice. You may not resell, sublicense, or reverse- engineer the Service.

4. Subscription and billing

5. Trial

The 14-day free trial provides full functionality. After 14 days, your license stops scanning and you are prompted to subscribe.

6. Acceptable use

You may not:

7. Disclaimer

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS". WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

Citation verification is best-effort. The CourtListener database covers most U.S. cases but may not include every state-court decision, every administrative ruling, or proprietary databases like Westlaw or LEXIS. A citation flagged "Unindexed" may still be a real case; a citation flagged "Likely invalid" should be independently verified before relying.

8. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Technocratics LLC's total liability under these terms is limited to the fees you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim.

We are not liable for any sanctions, damages, or losses arising from your reliance on the Service. Proof Brief is a tool; you are responsible for verifying every citation you submit.

9. Termination

Either party may terminate at any time. We may revoke your license without notice if you violate these terms. Termination does not entitle you to a refund except as described in section 4.

10. Changes

We may update these terms; the latest version will always be at this URL. Material changes are emailed to active subscribers at least 30 days before they take effect.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the state where Technocratics LLC is registered. Disputes will be resolved in the courts of that jurisdiction.
